Soviet Constructivist posters

Vladimir Stenberg (1899-1982)
"The General". Buster Keaton
Moscow 1929

297 * 420 mm (11,7 x 16,5 inch)

The film posters of such bright representatives of constructivism as the Stenberg brothers and Lavinsky had an impact on the work of other masters of the genre in the 1920s — J. Ruklevsky, N. Prusakov, P. Zhukov, M. Dlugach, A. Naumov, J. Gerasimovich, L. Voronov. They belonged to very different artistic groups, the aesthetic dogma of which could not but affect the style of the posters they created. However, many of them also had a serious impact on constructivist methods. For example, the members of the Society of Moscow Artists (OMH), who shared the theory of “production art" and cultivated the idea of "advertising", paid a lot of attention to colors and textures. This is reflected, for instance, in Naumov’s posters, in Prusakov’s and Zhukov‘s acutely grotesque “trick” posters that often combined hand-drawn and photographic images with abstract, schematized linear graphic elements. The members of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AARR), who defended realistic art — Ruklevsky, Dlugach and others — used the montage of drawn and font fragments and actively worked with color primarily to convey the film’s plot.
